Keeping Humans in the Right Part of the Loop
Why the future of autonomy isn't about removing people — it's about redesigning their relationship with intelligent systems.
What if the future of autonomous driving isn't about taking humans out of the loop, but keeping them in the right part of it?
Hesitation around fully autonomous vehicles might not be about the technology, but the fear of losing control. Even if automated systems perform better, people usually feel safer when they can stay informed, participate, or step in when it matters.
That's why I believe the future of Automotive UX isn't only about adding automation. It's about designing systems that build trust, behave in clear and predictable ways, and give people a true sense of control.
One useful lens is to see autonomy in levels: strategic, tactical, and operational. Instead of taking people out of the loop entirely, we can keep them actively involved at the tactical stage, in individual, context-heavy situations where their discretionary judgement matters most.
Maybe the real challenge isn't how to remove humans from the process, but how to redesign the relationship between people and autonomous systems.
