Preconditioning in Takeover UX
Why being mentally ready often matters more than reaction speed — and how shaping expectations builds trust.
Takeover situations are inevitable in autonomous vehicles.
While exploring Takeover UX, one insight from user research stood out: Users want to be informed in advance.
They feel safer when they can see what's coming. But there's a challenge here. As people, and even as systems, we can't predict everything. We can't always say exactly when a takeover will be needed.
So instead of aiming for perfect timing, I looked into preconditioning.
The goal isn't to predict everything perfectly. It's about shaping expectations. When designing for takeovers, being mentally ready often matters more than how fast someone reacts.
Preconditioning changes the experience from reacting to warnings to getting ready in advance. This helps build trust without giving a false sense of certainty.
